About the Image on the Front Cover This image is one the most endearing of all the sculptures made during the Classical Period of Athens. It shows a husband and wife whose names, inscribed above their heads, are Philoxenos, dressed in the uniform of a hoplite, one of many foot soldiers fighting in phalanx formation, wearing a metal helmet, breastplate, short tunic called exomis and sandals, and holding a shield on his left arm, and Philoumene, his wife, wearing a long robe, called peplos, flowing down yet attached at the waist, with her hair in a snood and elevated shoes. The pose is classic, standing straight in serene elegance, one knee bent as if they were ready to walk away from each other. They gaze at each other for a tender and sad farewell and shake hands to express their mutual love and loyalty. This scene is carved in relief on a grave stele made of marble, white with a hue of grey, from a quarry on the south side of Mount Pentelikon, about ten miles northeast of Athens. It may have been painted originally, but the paint has disappeared. The dimensions are 102.2 cm (40¼ in.) in height, 44.5 cm (17 ½ in.) in width and 16.5 cm (6½ in.) in depth. It is dated of about 400 BCE, during the return to normal life in Athens after the end of the Peloponnesian War in 404 BCE. The timing may indicate that the tribute was from the wife to her husband killed in action and, for this reason, that the gravestone was paid for by her wealthy family. Very useful contribution on The Life of Women in Ancient Athens, written by Joseph R. Laurin
By Johnny Sunday
This book is essential reading for students of human history and anyone who is interested in gaining a better understanding of what it was like to be a woman, back there in ancient times. Professor Laurin's book is the result of his accurate historical research and studies. One of the many interesting things that this volume made me aware of is that although there have been many changes and differences between the women of ancient times and the women of today, there are still some similarities. Some of these things are physical and I believe that they will not change, at least not by normal evolution, such as childbearing. Of course, with today's modern technology and medical advancements, I suppose it may someday be possible for a man to give birth, as was the fictional situation created by our exgovernor of California, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the funny movie titled "Junior" back in 1994.

As a result of reading this book, I have gained a greater understanding of women's oppression and of the pivotal role women have played in the development of humanity. I learned that in Athens and other parts of the world at that time, women were considered by men and by themselves inferior to men in status and in life style. They were restricted to certain roles and activities, such as motherhood, which was a contribution not only to their family, but also to the state, because the state needed more men to be born to fight wars, run the government, and contribute to other social activities such as art and literature, for example. Athenian woman were not physically as strong as men and, in general, could not compete with them. Like today, the women of those days made themselves desirable to the men, and the Athenian men loved them because the women made it possible skilfully and lovingly to have a family and care for it.

This book really opened my eyes to the general trends in women's life as I read the chapters which include the following titles: Girls, Brides, Wives, Mothers, Housewives, Parents, Unmarried Women, Relatives, Social Life, Activist Women, Aliens and Slaves, and Death. Although it is mainly a historical publication, this book is well written, easy to read and enjoyable. It provides an excellent and accurate picture of what the life of a typical woman in ancient Athens was like. The book will be very useful for undergraduate and graduate classes in ancient history and culture.

At the beginning of the book, Professor Laurin says, "In the eyes of Greek men, the womanhood of their wives, mothers and daughters was an object of inferiority of body and soul, respect for its role, warmth for its tenderness and admiration for its beauty. It was also one of torment, either for pleasure or for pain." At the end of the book, Professor Laurin writes, "The struggle is still ongoing toward making their lives a better lot through progress in equality of treatment and opportunity as well as respect for their special contributions and needs." "The stellar victories of women at the London Olympic of 2012 have shaken the argument, expounded especially by Aristotle, that women's physical and emotional weakness, in comparison with men's strength and reasoning ability, was the cause of her natural inferiority to men in all things. These games have proved the vitality of women, in mind and body, and revealed their rising competitive spirit, skills and physical power, enhanced by the improved quality of their facilities, nutrition, education and medical care. All girls and women need access to such enhancements if ever the male prejudice and, in some places, the violent resistance levied against their equality with boys and men can be suppressed for the benefit of mutual respect everywhere in the world."
