A resident's take on KJ LEE 3.0

From an OTO-HNS Resident's view point
I tell all the other residents that this is the best book for studying for the In-Service. There are tons of questions that come straight form this textbook. This is a similar "out-line" format akin to First Aid for USMLE. So a lot of students/residents should be familiar with this style. So if you know that you don't like that, don't get this book. It's a simple read and there are lots of details and is just densely packed with things we should remember. It's not going to be a good first read because it does require a baseline understanding of otolaryngology. So i usually recommend students/interns read Current-Dx and Tx for ENT because that's a little more explanatory with photos. But once you have the concepts down just read this thing all the time and take tons of notes in it. Very clinically based. So often times when i see a consult i'm thinking "what are the important aspects of this issue to remember" and i end up remembering the important bullets from KJ-Lee that's why the outline format works so well for medicine. This will let you manage patients in the immediacy and not bog you down with minutiae about studies etc like Cumming's and such.
The clinical-pearls section at the end is great for the last week or 2 before in-service. Great over-view of topics
Cons:
I hate paper-back textbooks with these flimsy bindings. Makes this thing very easy to get trashed up in your bag. So i recommend going to kinko's (i.e. fedex) to get it rebound and covered with a protective cover. Will make the textbook easier to open and lay flat on a table and fold on itself.
Typos: so if you know enough ENT, you will pick up on typos and just fix them yourself. It's ultimately a review guide and not a "definitive" reference text and should not be used as a reference for papers and publication.
HIGHLY recommend buying this text early in residency and just pounding it. for 90$ you can't go wrong.

This is a new revision of a classic text. Drs. Das and Chan have managed to incorporate the newest advances in otolaryngology while preserving the succinct outline style pioneered by Dr. Lee. Page for page, this is the most complete and organized resource ever published in the field.

Kindle version is nice to have with you

I have read the ninth edition of KJ Lee's Essential Otolaryngology for the in-training examination a couple of times. It is an appropriate format to allow you to work your way through the entire book within a few (~3-4) months prior to the exam. That being said, the true gem in this book is the final chapter: "Highlights & Pearls." This is basically a series of lists and drawings that every otolaryngology resident should just know without even thinking in order to score high on examinations.
I like having the Kindle version of this book because it is easy to have with me at all times & I can read through it when I have a random few minutes of free time.
This is certainly not a comprehensive text, but it is a good place to refresh your memory with high-yield information prior to an examination.
