Grave of Hummingbirds, by Jennifer Skutelsky

In a country that keeps secrets and buries sins, a stranger learns the price of both.

In the remote Andean village of Colibrí, a boy discovers what appears to be the body of an angel. But in the face and wounds of the dead, winged woman, Dr. Gregory Moreno sees something even more disturbing: an uncanny resemblance to his beloved late wife that cannot be mere chance. And in American anthropologist Sophie Lawson, still more echoes of the doctor’s lost love stir…igniting the superstitions of the townspeople, and an elusive killer’s deepest desires and despair.

When Sophie vanishes, her son and Dr. Moreno must navigate the streets, politics, and mysteries of a place where tortured ghosts and strange omens exist side by side with mortals both devout and corrupt. But they may need nothing less than a miracle to save her from sacrifice at the altar of a madman’s twisted passion.

Conjuring shades of Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, or even Neil Gaiman, Grave of Hummingbirds is a mesmerizing novel of dreams and demons, beauty and blood.

This is not the best book I have read - probably not the worst either, but lacking on so many fronts. The story rambles from the initial horrible murder to a year later when another murder occurs and the oncoming more murders provide the basis for the ending. We are faced with an Andean corrupt and frightening country town, ghosts which reappear from time to time, humans with strange connections to animals and birds, condors (which are some of the stronger characters), violence, searching for answers, youthful struggle with self identity, insanity, and on and on.

The characters are thinly developed and you have almost finished the book before you begin to feel any empathy with some of them. The author's prose is well done and some of her descriptions of locale and people are the best parts of the book. No complaint with editing as errors are not obvious.

A struggle for this reader to get through and when finished I had a real feeling of 'Huh?'. I felt there could have been more, or maybe even less which was better developed. One of the few Kindle Firsts that has been a disappointment. Not particularly recommended.

There's 29 chapters, the first half dozen fly by. The momentum is quick, not giving you enough information in one sitting, forcing you to keep reading to figure out what was left unsaid. It's good in a compelling mystery style but overall instead of making you feel a certain way it feels like it's just telling you to feel that way without giving enough explanation. I want to feel empathy and remorse but I'm not emotionally invested in the characters when I want to be. So by a third of the way through you feel invested but you're still not sure why. A handful of characters are introduced in the beginning as well, adding to the slight confusion. Each one basically gets their own chapter so a bit of detail and background is put into them but it's still a little overwhelming to grasp at the start of a book. And each quickly tells us of their hardships, hardships that are bad in themselves so you feel for the character, but you've only just started reading about them so you can't identify with them yet and so some of the appeal is lost because you don't know them. If you can get over that hump of why is this happening? Is this just a bad place, are these just bad people, what's the reasoning, the motive? Then you'll find yourself almost half way done.

A story full of twists and turns...
By ScrapBlog
Grave of Hummingbirds by Jennifer Skutelsky is a mystery, crime, and suspense thriller and the author through the sheer power and force of her writing brings a haunted and gothic intensity to the story. Well imagined and quite original, this story which is set in the remote Andean village of Colibrí grapples with something which many of us wouldn’t dare to imagine.

In writing this absorbing, dark and haunting story, author Jennifer Skutelsky has crossed various boundaries few others have. The portrayal of the main protagonist as edgy, and full of grief and passion is both terrifying and pitiful. Gregory Moreno and Sophie Lawson are well fleshed characters. There are twists and turns which keeps one on the edge of seat. It is a wonderful concoction which many readers will enjoy.
