About the Author
Dennis Savini is a professional photographer based in Zurich, Switzerland. He strongly believes that the future success of the photography profession is up to those who participate in the field, and he enjoys contributing his expertise through teaching. Dennis has been training apprentices since 1980 and teaches workshops for professionals in Switzerland and abroad. His experience teaching these workshops led him to realize how little importance is given to vocational training in many countries-a realization that inspired him to write this book.
Since 2005, Dennis has been a partner and course instructor at cap-fotoschule, a photography school in Zurich, where he trains future professional photographers.

Excellent resource for accomplished studio photographers

Those of us who did not attend photography school or spend our twenties assisting in studios often have gaps in our shooting repertoire. Photography is problem-solving, and we have more than adequate analytical skills, but education still counts. I have seen too many cocky photographers get tied in knots when they take on a shoot that requires special skills. Also, many part time photographers lack the organizational and legal smarts to make their operations efficient and profitable.
Most educators know that learning a trade requires three elements: being told what to do, watching someone do it, and doing it yourself. To that end, photographers have sought out webinars and DVDs, where one can watch someone plan, shoot, and process, live seminars and classes, which allow one to perform the tasks and ask questions, and books, which lay out all the details and act as a reference.
Someone recently said that revenue from photography education now exceeds that from the sale of images. Whether or not that is true, there is certainly a lot of instruction going on, and anywhere there is money, there are problems. Many webinars and seminars are thinly disguised advertisements for products at their worst, and even when the class is useful, it is often limited by the sponsorships and allegiances of the instructor. Others have the faults of the worst sort of inspirational presentations - lots of teary stories and self-help nonsense. There are fantastic offerings available from creativelive and others, but they are habit-forming, time-consuming, tough to retain, and still are no substitute for hands on training.
Dennis Savini's Masterclass is a nice counterpoint to the blizzard of instruction that targets rising professional photographers. A typical Rocky Nook production, it combines an attractive layout with well thought out, organized text. Gorgeously printed on substantial paper, it is bound to lay flat, as instructional books should. Copiously illustrated with wonderful examples of studio work, it shows the best work possible in a variety of situations.
While this is a great book for studio photographers who want to broaden their skills, it is not for neophytes. The first quarter of the book, an introduction to general issues in studio photography, is much more suggestive than directive. Rather than give copious detail about issues like the physical plant, gear, legal issues, and marketing, it simply outlines the issues and choices you have to make. If you want detailed information on modifiers, cameras, lights, decoration, advertising, social media, etc., look elsewhere.
The meat of the book consists of a comprehensive catalog of product and corporate shots. Each shot is accompanied by technical details, and throughout the presentation, short articles with general lighting principles and shooting tips supplement the pieces covering the individual set ups. Post production and shooting steps are illustrated on those shots that rely heavily on special effects.
One weakness of the book is the short shrift given to portrait shooting, which seems like an afterthought at the end of the book.
The photos in the book were shot largely with medium and large format cameras, and the photographs produced, will in most cases be out the reach of most photographers. However, I learned how to be a better landscape photographer from studying Ansel Adams, even though I will never haul a view camera into the wilderness. The techniques and principles are clearly laid out in this volume and many of the set ups within the capabilities of most shooters. If one seriously wants to expand studio skills, the book could be useful.
That being said, it's definitely a masterclass - amateurs or new studio photographers will likely find this volume intimidating, if inspiring, but in the end not as useful as other books aimed squarely at them by authors like Kelby and Evening. The introductory material lacks cohesion. For this group, the book does not justify the price.
For established or master photographers, however, it serves as an excellent reference book on handling tricky or specialized shooting situations. The setups show great variety, and the photography great craft and finesse, well explained and illustrated. This book would have been best presented with an expanded number of case studies and a less dismissive approach to portraiture.

Very good if slightly intimidating overview

First impressions of Masterclass: Professional Studio Photography are that it is a rather lovely product with thick glossy pages, a nice hefty hardback cover and huge high quality images. Content wise it has a general introduction to studio photography followed by eight sections on different studio sub-disciplines; product, still life, industrial, cosmetics, jewellery, drinks, food and portraits photography.
The introductory section covers lighting, cameras, lenses, a little bit about digital enhancement and a rather nice few pages covering running a studio and business. As this is about studio photography the cameras under discussion are large and medium format rather than the more common SLR. This is in keeping with the rest of the book - it is aimed at the professional photographer so the equipment is very much high price and high end. The information is concise and well presented though in places feels more like an overview than an in depth coverage of topics; though that is really to be expected it does sometimes just make you want more.
The main body of the book is a series of what are effectively worked examples of how to produce a studio shot. These examples are grouped into the eight sub disciplines listed above and each sub discipline has its own short introduction covering the pertinent general information.
Each worked example follows the format of the finished image as a full page shot, a description of the inspiration and process of taking the photograph and a diagram showing the layout of the studio. Many, though not all, examples also have additional information such as the digital manipulation used to produce the final image and additional tips such as polishing bottles with turtle wax to produce long lasting beads of condensation. Each example is very well laid out, explained and lavishly illustrated.
If your used to a simple camera and single light source setup then some of the worked examples can be a bit mind boggling with multiple light sources from different angles and via multiple reflectors and diffusers. One thing that was a surprise to me was the amount of post processing and image merging. I naively thought that given the controlled environment of the studio it would be comparatively easy to produce a perfect image with perhaps only a couple of Photoshop tweaks but that appears to be very much not the case. When working with such high resolution and high quality images perfection is very difficult to achieve.
All in all Masterclass: Professional Studio Photography is a lovely and an excellent addition to a professional or serious amateur photographer's bookshelf though is probably best reserved for those who have had at least a little exposure to studio photography as complete neophytes may find it a little intimidating.

A True Masterclass

I don't know how many amateur photographers would benefit from reading this thoughtful and complete work. Since most of of us who enjoy photography don't work in a studio and are not paid for our work, one might think this book will not appeal to many.
However, photography is similar to painting in that the management of light is perhaps the most critical part of the process. Sure, setting up the scene, framing the composition, timing the exposure to the action are all important, but in the end, if light management is poor, the finished product will is likely to be poor, and may not even be rescued by time spent in Photoshop.
While the focus of the book seems to be on photographing "things," there is much more. General sections include:

Portraits
Each section includes material that is unique to the book. While I doubt I will become a professional studio photographer, what I've read here will certainly help me present items in a better light that I'm planning to sell on EBay.
There is a moderate amount of information on setting up a studio, including advice about the practical matter of running a studio on a daily basis. The author brings his ingenuity to each project, with as much creative thought used to photograph food or an industrial product as photographing a model or doing a portrait. What I appreciated the most was his approach to lighting each of these projects, with many approaches described that I had never considered.
This book will not be for every photographer, but I think most photographers will learn something of importance from it. Highly recommended
