The Shadows of Type, by Angelina Bennet

Psychological type systems such as the Myers-Briggs® are incredibly useful in helping people to improve their self-awareness and awareness of others. However the current models do not explain how well somebody uses their type, why two people of the same type can differ greatly in their effectiveness, or how we can maximise the potential of our type? The 'Shadows of Type' model provides the answers to these questions by placing psychological type back into its original Jungian context, 'upgrading' this to set it within the psychosynthesis model, and then combining it with ego development theory. This leads to detailed descriptions of the 16 psychological types through seven levels of ego development. Using the suggested coaching techniques and applications, individuals can gain more insight into how they are using their type and the traps that they can fall into, and coaches are enabled to work with psychological type developmentally, transformationally and transpersonally.

This author has taken the meat of all the BEST books out there on MBTI and type and put them into one jam packed little purple b
By VeryHappyCustomer
She doesn't skimp on anything. If your sick of reading about MBTI and type as it should exist in the "Perfect Fantasy World of Human Interaction" and would really love to learn how type works in the real world, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK. I feel like I have finally found the book that I wanted to read when I started out learning about this stuff, and it is just as good now that I know a lot about MBTI and Typology. Buy the book. You won't be sorry. It doesn't matter if your a beginner or an old pro. It is really awesome how this author has put this book together. I feel like I can't get across my excitement for stumbling across this book. It's that good. lol, buy it.

fascinating look at the interesection of developmental stages and mbti types
By Douglas OLoughlin
if you are interested in both developmental stages (Torbert and Rooke, Wilber, Kegan, Graves, etc) AND MBTI, then this is a book you want to check out. The author has done a credible job of laying out a map of how "type" would manifest itself at the various stages. The clients i work with who are familiar with both constructs find the idea very stimulating, and the descriptions accurate. Not sure if you would find it useful if you do not use both frameworks, but with at least one it still might be worth a read.

An Amazingly Good Book!
By J. T. McAllister
This is an amazingly good book. It provides insights into personality type that finally put all the pieces together. One of the main problems with the MBTI system has been the fact that it paints such a rosy picture of each type, highlighting the best that each type can typically be. However, people in the real world rarely live up to these descriptions in a consistent fashion. Instead, we may see either a pathological or an inspiring version of them, depending on their maturity level, their degree of comfort, their ability to handle stress or personal issues and various other factors.

For example, I'm an ENFP and I've known many other ENFPs. Apart from differences due to upbringing and life experience, there are also differences in degree of ENFP-like traits expressed by us. Some are negative, manipulative, needy and only occasionally manifest the gems that ENFPs are known for. Others are super-positive for a time, then soon after, brooding and distant, taking something someone said too seriously, or feeling too insecure. Still others are more consistently balanced, inspiring and a true joy to be around. What accounts for this? The 7 levels of ego development highlighted in this book.

As we develop, we have natural gifts and use these more frequently. But other, less preferred parts of ourselves get pushed into the background. As we mature and progress through the levels of ego development, we begin to address the underdeveloped parts of ourselves, balance out, become better able to understand people and events and become better people overall. Some people get stuck at earlier stages of development, while others move on up to middle levels. The rare few reach the highest levels of ego development. The people who are the more pathological versions of a type are stuck at earlier levels. That's not to say there aren't pitfalls in the higher levels. These are also addressed in the book.

As someone who is very interested in personal growth, this book is a rare gem. It provides a a guide for each type describing each level of development and highlighting the understanding and blind spots at each level. It then details the psychological changes that occur when the next level is reached. The book is geared towards those interested in transpersonal coaching as well as any who are interested in their own personal development.

One of the best gifts for me in this book was looking at the best that each type can be, not from the typical MBTI decriptions, but from what happens when they reach truly great heights and finally come to terms with their non-preferred functions. Each of the 16 types can reach truly inspiring levels. This has helped me see more of the potential in types who are at lower levels, are more difficult to understand and harder to get along with.

Overall, out of the many books I've read on MBTI, this one is by far the best and I thoroughly recommend it.
